It is done to decrease the weight of coaches resulting in increase of speed..
Yes it is a waste of diesel and hence HOG is being considered as a replacement

but we hv seen so many tyms eog is continuously running on after having hog attachment.. IR should hv to be take seriously on this matter..

You actually can't say it is waste of Diesel. Self generating coaches weights almost 10%more than ICF coaches, and the amount of power needed to pull these coaches will be more compared to LHB. So indirectly, loco will be using more diesel/electric city to pull Self generating coaches.
