MUMBAI: Around 40 persons had to manually push an outstation train at a speed of 5kmph after it jumped a signal and landed in a dead-end with no overhead equipment (OHE) at Mumbai Central on Thursday evening. Long-distance and suburban train services were severely affected following the incident.
The 16-coach Mumbai Central-Lucknow Suvidha Express (82907) had left platform 2 at 7.45 pm though it had to wait as there was a red signal and then move to the Virar-bound fast track.
Mumbai divisional railway manager Mukul Jain said, "The loco pilot did not wait for the red signal to change (to green or yellow). The point for the track had been set in the direction of the dead-end, which is a non-overhead equipment (OHE) area, at 7.50pm."
Seven coaches had moved out of the platform and the pantograph of the locomotive got damaged. Since the loco pilot moved the train, the engine entered the non-OHE area and hence could not draw traction power. It was too late by the time the loco pilot realised this.
Jain said, "There was no chance of an accident as the engine came to halt on its own as it did not have traction power." Since it is a dead-end, another engine could not be sent from ahead. Also, the locomotive of the train too could not push the train in the reverse direction as it could not draw power.
At the rear end of the train was the dead-end of the platform, so the engine could not be brought attached from the station-end.
Jain said, "We have to push the coaches manually to clear the path." The train was emptied of passengers to ensure that nobody suffered an injury if the coaches hit the buffer at the rear-end while pushing.
Another official said, "The point was clamped and a speed restriction was imposed at the spot, after which trains were allowed to pass around 9.15pm." Fast trains were diverted to the slow track between Dadar and Mumbai Central.
Loco pilot may be suspended pending an inquiry. He may face severe punishment, which can include removal from services or demotion.
Platforms 1 and 2 were out of service at Mumbai Central. Saurashtra Mail and Gujarat Mail were scheduled to leave from platforms 3 and 4.

सिग्नल तोडून पुढे गेलेल्या मुंबई सेंट्रल-लखनऊ सुविधा एक्स्प्रेसला ढकलणा-या ४० रेल्वे कर्मचा-यांना पश्चिम रेल्वे प्रशासनाने एकूण १० हजारांचे सामूहिक बक्षीस जाहीर केले आहे. एक्स्प्रेस हाताने ढकलून फलाटावर आणण्याची ही घटना रेल्वे इतिहासात पहिल्यांदा घडली आहे. दरम्यान, सिग्नल तोडून एक्स्प्रेस पुढे नेणाºया लोकोपायलटचे निलंबन करण्यात आले असून त्याच्या चौकशीसाठी समिती स्थापन करण्यात आली आहे.
सुविधा एक्स्प्रेस मुंबई सेंट्रल फलाट क्रमांक २ वरून गुरुवारी रात्री ७.४५ वाजता रवाना झाली. मात्र सिग्नल बदलासाठी न थांबता लोकोपायलटने थेट एक्स्प्रेस पुढे नेली. यामुळे विरार दिशेकडील रुळावर एक्स्प्रेसचे सात डबे गेले. हा डेड-एंड असल्यामुळे येथे ओव्हरहेड यंत्रणा नव्हती. परिणामी इंजीन सुरू करण्यासाठी ओएचईमधून विद्युत प्रवाह मिळाला नाही. या प्रकारामुळे उपनगरीय रेल्वे सेवांसह लांब पल्ल्यांच्या मेल-एक्स्प्रेसवर देखील परिणाम झाला. विरार दिशेकडे डेड-एंड असल्यामुळे पर्यायी इंजीन पाठवणेही शक्य नव्हते. अखेर रेल्वे कर्मचारी हमाल आणि अन्य सहकारी अशा ४० जणांनी एक्स्प्रेसला धक्का मारून ही एक्स्प्रेस पुन्हा फलाटावर आणण्यात आली.
डेड-एंड असल्यामुळे पर्यायी इंजीन नेता आले नाही. या वेळी गाडीत प्रवासी नव्हते. डेड-एंड असल्यामुळे अपघात होण्याची भीती टळली, अशी माहिती पश्चिम रेल्वेचे विभागीय रेल्वे व्यवस्थापक मुकूल जैन यांनी दिली.
