This is reg the monsoon timings in Konkan route. I do not understand what purpose this serves. Due to this scheduled late running of trains on this route, what is happening on most of the occasions is the trains are stopped at all unscheduled places for a long time with the purpose of sticking to the schedule.
Can't this be done away with? A total of 4-6 hours is lost during the whole trip.

As you are aware most of the Konkan railway route passes through a mountainous terrain.
Landslides ,boulders falling on the rocks are not uncommon sight during the monsoon season.
Safety nets can be seen dangling on both sides of the tracks to ensure no obstacles are encountered for smooth train journey.
This coupled with speed restrictions enable the trains to negotiate the rugged terrain.
...

Though the tracks are capable for a speed of upto 160 kms/hr, They don't exceed 120 kms/hr.
During the monsoon this speed is brought down further to about 50-75 kms/hr for reasons mentioned above.
