HJ HJ HJ Happy journey bro HJ Zahaib Bhau
Hello fellow IRIans. If details of train travel in the United States intrigues you by any magnitude, you may want to follow this blog as I plan to bring about live updates of my maiden train journey aboard the Amtrak (AMerica-TRAcK) this week.
I'd start off in the town of Cincinnati, Ohio on the 9th of December, 01:40 local time (9th Dec 12:10 hrs IST) on board Cardinal #51. This train runs between New York and Chicago (via Washington DC, Cincinnati and Indianapolis). The scheduled arrival of the Cardinal at Chicago will be 10:00 hrs on the same day (21:30 hrs IST).

a buffer of 4 hours, I plan to board the second longest train of the country, The California Zephyr #5, all the way to Emeryville, San Francisco. This 3900 kms (2438 mi) journey (through what they call the most scenic route of the country) is expected to be 52 hours long as the scheduled arrival at Emeryville is 16:20 on December 11th (Dec 12, 05:50 IST).
Hoping the trip to pan out as expected and make up for the void of missing IR.

Thanks.
Checking in bags is very convenient. I have travelled from St Paul MN to Jackson MS with a change of train at Chicago IL three or four times. It was very convenient to check my heavy bags at St Paul tagged all the way upto Jackson. Thanks to this system I was able to visit a few sights in Chicago during the 4-5 hours waiting time carrying my light hand baggage.
Another interesting thing about AMTRAK I found (and you can confirm for those interested) was that in most trains

the coaches are ''double decker'' with the toilets, baths (and I think a couple of bedrooms) at the lower level. The Coach (chair car seats) are on the upper level. Can you confirm whether my memory is right?

Yes sir, that still holds true with just a slight difference. One, we have single decked coaches on some routes, like the one I had for my Cardinal. (Pic 1)
Also one coach is of one particular kind. Slepping coaches will only have sleeping accommodation and similarly with coach seats (CC Class)
Secondly, the doubled decked coaches have a limited amount of coach seats on the lower level as well (12 odd seats or so) (Check the windows in pic 2). If you aren't interested in the better view from the upper deck,

picking the lower level gives you a lot more peace as people don't walk through the coach all the time. Also, as you mentioned, restrooms and luggage area is on the same level. So these are much more convenient seats for senior citizens.

Wonder whether you read about the AMTRAK accident last monday. It seems the train was travelling at 80mph instead of 30mph. Here is a link: www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-42408624
