Yes it's shorter, but has to skip Hassan jn (i mean there'll be more passengers to HAS from kcg, GTL,BAY than towards Chikmagalur
And construction of Chikmagalur - Sakaleshpur line has not yet started (will take long time i guess). Even it can be diverted for weekly once or twice depending on demand towards Chikmagalur.
When was the last train introduced by IR on the Sakleshpur-Subramanya Road line? There is a contract between SWR and HMRDC which has a cap on number of passenger trains on this section. You are unlikely to get permission for this train
Yes what you've said is correct.there were many trains demanded by passengers, but declined by authorities cause of the hilly location/terrain. But as far as i remember last year there was a proposal to construct sidings(don't know if it is accurate information or not), which may result in accommodating few train.
There have been many discussions on IRI about the 32 year agreement between SWR and HMRDC. This prevents new trains from starting on this route. Here is a 2011 discussion /blog/post/287811/7
