GG's original avatar was as a Gadag-Solapur express/passenger (not clear if it was a passenger or express). In 1972, it was extended to Hubli, and Golgumbaz express was inaugurated as a overnight express between Hubli and Solapur.
From December 16th, 1983, Golgumbaz was extended to Bangalore. It used to be a day-time ICE between SBC-UBL and an overnight between UBL-SUR. (Train number 6541/42). After GC of SBC-UBL section, initially the Chalukya was introduced, and GG continued running with the numbers 7841/42 on the MG section between Gadag and Bijapur, with more or less the same schedule as earlier i.e., ONT between GDG-BJP (Though it no longer carried the name officially).
