A TTE told me that the Dhanbad-Alappuzha express has half its coaches reserved for MAS, including 2 dedicated AC coaches. I was surprised to see most of the train empty at Palakkad (the local police was checking the bags of passengers from Jharkand randomly and caught 4 people but that's another story) and was wondering why IR does not run the occupied coaches as slip coaches on some other train. The TTE also said some coaches are reserved for the MAS- Alappuzha sector which is surprising.
Yes, 2 dedicated coaches are for MAS, and it can be used by commuters traveling between MAS and ALLP and vice versa. It doesn't mean that, that coaches will be having 0 occupancy. Those coaches are meant for people who reserve in MAS-ALLP section. Also for unreserved sleeper ticket holders.
Train will be getting empty at PGT, bcoz from PGT, no one will prefer to take this train to ALLP. Any person who want to reach ALLP, can take SBC-ERS ICE, which comes 1hour after PGT and will reach ERS 1 hour before Dhanbad. Hence basically this train is not getting patronage because of its TT from PGT-ALLP. But in some scenarios, it will still run full

From DHN-Allp, train is almost full till MAS- Katpadi where most passengers get down. Up till CBE this train is ok after which this train is worst than a passenger train.
To accommodate daily passengers between ERS-Allp, train is given enough slack time to reach Ernakulam at 6pm. During Sabarimala season though, this train is full till ERS
