Indeed so! After the Howrah Duronto was diverted via the main line, the need for a more realistic alternative to the Howrah Duronto is definitely required! With all due respect, paying extra money, and going via the main line can never be justificable for a SL Passenger from Howrah side!
But Sanket raises a good point too, an bi-weekly AC express without any dyanamic fare can do wonders on this route!
Why not start by regularising this train?

300+ bookings in it's return trip...all this shows that ac express would run with heavy waitlist given 4 months arp in this route
It didn't get spanked as much a you thought....4 hrs delay for a special is normal enough
Yeah NCR treated it with a lot of respect I must say, maybe because first, its got loads of slack and secondly late afternoon is probably the best time to cross NCR as traffic is the least. Still, very good performance because even regular trains like Kalka mail gets terribly delayed in MGS-CNB-GZB section even though it runs in afternoon-evening despite having slack.
