In my journey today in 12596 HS, I got the chance to enter guard cabin and have a talk with guard. There were few interesting points discussed (you might be aware of all of them, but I felt like posting)
1. The train is capable of 130 KMPH, but the loco pilot is trained to operate only at 110, so he is not doing MPS on anvt-cnb section.
2. Yesterday at Khurja, there was failure of some transceiver which caused signal failure in section.
3.

At TDL, the trains at loop line pass with caution of 30KMPH. This cause trains to slow and possibly stand at outer if track not cleared.
4. HS stopped today at TDL as a passenger had medical emergency.
5. In NDLS- GKP section, the best train is my fav: Vaishali. It is board train, and given highest priority after premium trains (yes, I know it is well known fact)
6. In EOG, a permanent person is available who monitors the HVAC of the coaches.
7. The GZB-ALJN have too many passenger trains, and even Rajdhani can be stopped because of them if needed.
I have seen few interesting things as well:
1. As the TDL station is curved, and guard cannot give visual clearance to loco pilot, the clearance is given on walkie talkie by whistle to start the train.
2. When the train entered pf, guard instructed loco pilot that of have reached last coach and he can halt.
3. When the train started and reached mainline after pf, guard told loco pilot that main line reached, loop line finished. Virtually instructing him he can hit the MPS.
I will try to talk again, and get more interesting stuff.

First off, all passenger trains are hauled by passenger LPs on a priority basis. Only for diverted or late running passenger trains, and in cases where is no possibility of arranging a passenger LP are trains hauled by goods LPs. Even in this case, only A-grade Goods LPs are allowed (A pool of such LPs is prepared beforehand). In the worst case, a non-A grade goods LP will be accompanied by a Loco-inspector for running a passenger train. So even if the train is being hauled by a Freight locomotive, the LP is most definitely a passenger LP.
Secondly loco links are decided on a periodic basis. At the beginning of, say, every month, a detailed crew

and loco link plan is drawn up at the divisional level for allotting crew and loco links to regular trains. Freight traffic is predicted and locomotives are provided accordingly. Now, special trains are usually non-daily trains introduced on a relatively short notice. Also, they have very few runs. So creating a dedicated loco link for a special train would be an unnecessary effort, and also may not always be possible. Most, if not all of the passenger locos available at the originating station or at loco change points would already be part of pre-planned loco links. And creating a new loco link just for a weekly train with only a limited run would be very inefficient. That's why specials mostly get whatever locos are free at the trip shed.
