buy the ticket in the ticket countar, and board the general or u/r (unreserved) compartment of the train. I think max distance is 500 kms(some one confirm), but i have seen those getting general ticket for more than 800 kms. so someone pls confirm on this point.
Not such a long distance!!!!
U can get unreserved ticket for superfast accounting to 150 kms too, but many trains got restriction on-board!!!
The restriction is imposed mostly on superfast/long running trains!!!!
Still, many times, the ticket clerk ask u, which train u wanna board & would inform u that ticket been issued for that train or not. (If he doesnt ask, kindly confirm...

Sir, Restrictions (exist in select train for select routes / straches) are for minimum distance and never for maximum. For Example, in Himsagar Express, which runs for 3715 Kms., one can buy ticket from source (Jammu Tawi / Kanyakumari) to destination (Kanyakumari / Jammu Tawi).
