Introduced as the 903/904 Weekly express between Trivandrum and Ahmedabad on Republic day, 1984, running via Erode,Bangalore,Guntakal, Solapur.
In 1989-90, it was further extended to Rajkot and was a superfast train numbered 12603/04. Sometime later, it lost it's superfast statues (along with a bunch of other trains on the Wadi-CSTM route). After the opening of the Konkan railway, the train was diverted to it's present route and extended to Veraval later.
