Flagged off by the then Railway Minister Sri Madhavrao Scindia from Madras Central Station on April 24th, 1988.
Prior to this there was a Bombay Madras Janata express operating between the 2 cities. This Janata was cancelled and the Madras Bombay superfast express (Popularly known as Super) was introduced on a similar, but faster schedule.

Initially this train used to run 5 days a week, sharing a slot with the bi-weekly Dadar-Mangalore express (which used to run via GTL-KJM-JTJ). Later, the frequency of the Netravati express (Then a tri-weekly train running to Cochin and Mangalore) was increased, the Dadar-Mangalore express was cancelled and the Madras Dadar superfast was made a daily train.
Initially it used to have an RSA with the Madras Dadar express (present day 11041/42) and was an SR train (963/64, later 6063/64). Later the RSA was changed, the train was moved to Madras Egmore and is now a CR train.
