Lady vendor at Peravurani on 7th February 2012. She was selling what appeared to be edible firewood, further enquiries reveal that the food is called "Panankazhangu" (in Tamil) and is the root of a palm tree.

Not exactly of the palm tree.
Its called tEgalu(tey-gal-oo) in Telugu.
It's boiled along with salt and served.
Chew it extract the fibre and juice and threw.
High fibre content.
