GUNTUR: Concerned with the dip in passenger turnout, South Central Railway(SCR) authorities at Guntur division have started a study to find out the reason behind it....

There could be other reasons. One is autos are available pretty frequently compared to trains. Second is passengers need to walk a lot and may be use a FOB for trains, while autos are available at the doorstep (as per article). This not only saves time, but trouble of buying a ticket in a queue, walking/climbing up to the platform. It could be the same at the destination, too. walk/climb to exit the station and use another mode of transport to reach home/office/market, whatever. Another is while you are buying ticket, train arrives. If it leaves before you can catch then the wait and the frustration associated with standing in queue and walking/climbing might make one use autos. These look like shared autos, charging per passenger basis stuffing 6-8 passengers. That way they become the preferred mode.
Risk of lives in autos on highways is high. Bus will be better than autos on highways. But again they need to go till bus stand by auto.
