Why extra coaches are named as 'E' or 'X'

I dont know reason of writing the X behind the last coach, It may be that to highlight the presence of train. Any opinion?
To mark the end of the rake. That ensures that the rake is full and some part of it has not parted elsewhere. The X is the sign of the Last Vehicle (LV)
IMHO, each zone follows its own nomenclature varying from E, X, EX or EXT.
I don't think there is any nomenclature for this.
