Yes, popular demand.

There were no trains to Delhi on the Wadi-Daund in the 80s, and connectivity between Bangalore and North Karnataka was also not sufficient.

the people and politicians from North Karnataka demanded that it be regularized via Gulbarga so that the train serves the state better (otherwise, only SBC and RC were the only major places served by the train).

Also, places like Bijapur were on the MG back then. Passengers from that area would travel to SUR by MG and switch to KK there for going to Bangalore or to the North. So, there was a lot of demand to run KK regularly via Gulbarga.

Now more than state representing train, it is serving more as a train to shirdi from both sides. Just check number of passangers alighting and boarding at KPG, you will get answer that ,it can not be diverted . Can be checked from both sides.

The ZBTT has nothing to do with zero "slack", if introduced ZBTT is based on Zero Sum Game theory, which means at a destination if 100 trains were sped up, there will be other 100 trains which need to be slowed down to help those 100 trains so net is 100-100=0. Now this is not for NDLS alone, its per destination so we will see trains slowed down in intermediate sections as well, while doing so some trains will get insane time slots affecting passengers while others will retain their VVIP status.

Funny thing is that it's now the fastest non-AC train from SBC to Delhi, after KSK via KCG's diversion to UBL. It feels like SWR is trolling SBC division.
