A World Record Set By India - DOUBLE STACK Container Freights (Under Electric Wires) click here

A new world benchmark was created by Indian Railways last year by running the first Double Stack Container Train in high rise Over Head Equipment (OHE) electrified sections of the Western Railway zone. In a first of its kind achievement, the national transporter commissioned the first high rise OHE, which has a contact wire height of 7.87 metre. According to the Railway Ministry, this will give a boost to the ambitious mission of Green India as

the latest green initiative over the Indian Railways network. With this development, Indian Railways has become the first railway network to operate Double Stack Container train with high reach pantograph in high rise OHE section. These operations commenced on 10 June 2020 from Gujarat’s Palanpur and Botad railway stations.

Earlier in 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the world’s first double-stack long-haul container train from New Ateli in Haryana to New Kishanganj in Rajasthan. He also launched the 306-km Rewari-Madar section of the Western dedicated freight corridor (DFC).

Modi said that since the launch of the New Bhaupur-New Khurja section of the DFC, the average speed of freight trains has tripled in that section.

** ABOUT DOUBLE STACK CONTAINER FREIGHT TRAINS **
Double-stack rail transport is a form of intermodal freight transport in which railroad cars carry two layers of intermodal containers. Using double stack technology, a freight train of a given length can carry roughly twice as many containers, sharply reducing transport costs per container.

In India, Mundra Port and Pipavav Port operate double-stacked diesel and electric trains on 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) gauge using flat wagons. It is one of only three countries to commercially double stack 9 ft 6 in (2,896 mm) tall (high cube) containers on a train. India is building the Dedicated Freight Corridor, an economical and environmental friendly electrical traction based double-stack freight railway network which can transport international standard containers.

** ABOUT THE VIDEO **
A Double Stack Container Freight arriving at Rewari Jn with ROZA WDG-4G 49033 at the helm. As it is clearly visible in the video, the OHE has a clearance of 7.87m which is much higher than the traditional ones, to support double stack operations (of about 7.81m height). The electric engines on such routes require a high-rise pantograph to get in contact with the catenary.

The video was shot onboard 02487 Bikaner - Delhi Sarai Rohilla Intercity SF Special.
