I would like to ask a question regarding the braking of EMD locomotives or in general any diesel electric locomotive. Whenever a train is coming to a halt the loco usually comes down from the higher notches down to the 2nd and then finally the 1st notch.
But many times i have seen locos are coming to halt in Notch 4 itself. Why do the LPs do this ?
Like in the following videos.

So technically a loco can be put to halt at any notch but to avoid energy loss they notch down ?
But in above cases to maintain air reservoir pressure they are braking in Notch 4 if I'm right ?
