The Mahalaxmi Express used to be called the Poona Mail and later the Bombay Mail. In 1868 and 1875, it departed from Bombay at 14:30 and arrived in Poona at 21:00 or 20:30. In 1889, the departure time changed to 14:00 and arrival time to 19:30. In 1961, it was renamed the 303 Bombay-Poona Mail and the departure time was changed to 17:50, arriving in Poona at 21:50. In 1971, it became the 303 Bombay Mail and extended to Miraj. In 1974, it was renamed the 303 Mahalaxmi Express, going from Poona Mail to Bombay Mail to Mahalaxmi. More information can be found here. On April 21, 1863, the Bhor Ghat was opened for traffic, connecting Bombay-Karjat and Lonavala-Pune. Two horsekeepers with reflective lamps allowed for early evening travel for the Poona Mail.
