Unfortunately, this is one thing that unites India. It's very common in UP too despite being absolutely unneeded. And the worst part, if you are standing at the door to deboard and the train is crawling, some person from the behind will poke you and say that the train is slow enough, deboard and don't waste time. What exactly will they gain from saving few seconds, I dunno.
Oh, and the official Twitter account of Railways itself shares multiple instances where folks have gotten b/w train and tracks and RPF folks saved...

Kalyan Jn serves nearly 1 crore population Thane district. And mostly trains stop for 2-3 minutes bcoz of rail traffic congestion.
