Mails were needed in those days, when the communication system was not sufficient. so Mails were carried through Rail Mail Service from one place to other. Today everything is advanced, so the call for Mail came to an end.
Even now the letters get transported thru various services. parcel systems, speed post etc.

mail trains were introduced when the postal communication was much in demand, as then it was trains that carried mail... now the volume of post's/ mail's handled by postal service is very less, and also improved road condition has made the posts to be sent by road... hence there's no need for railways to introduce mail trains

kyunki chiththi likhne ka zamana chala gaya! :P
Basically now they attach RMS coach in any train now and don't specifically call it a 'mail'.
