12987/12988 SDAH-AII-SDAH used to run as 2986/2986 SDAH-JP-SDAH Express, which was the predecessor of 12987/88. 2985/86 was extended to AII in 2009/10 as 2987/88. Untill 2006/07, this train used to run via AF-BXN-SWM-JP route & was later diverted permanently to run via AF-BTE-JP route in 2008/09. See attachments. 2985/2986 in 2006/07 used to cover 1625 kms in 28 hrs 30 mins time @ 57 kph.

See 23-1 & 23-1A of 2006 TAAG
Ananya Express still runs via SWM. There is no other train to SWM from Kolkata apart from 12315/16 now. Hence diversion of 12987/88 via MTJ-AWR & diversion of 12495/96 via AF-SWM-JP is necessary.
