Not too long ago, there existed a train called KING COROMANDEL. It was also referred to as the KING OF SER. But alas today it reminds me of the decadent HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE. One of the favourite quotes of HISTORY relating to the DECLINE OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE is " There came a time when the HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE WAS NEITHER HOLY, NOR ROMAN NOR AN EMPIRE. If we were to stretch that to the COROMANDEL exp, the time has now come when KING COROMANDEL is no longer a KING but a mere COMMONER. Just one more name in the roster of trains run by IR. The train had unscheduled halts at Gudur and later in the evening at Godavari. Its progress was impeded by speed restrictions galore and red signals at several places along its path. Little wonder that we arrived 40 mns late at Vijayawada and 45 mns late at Rajahmundry.
Meanwhile the condition of the toilets had become MISERABLE. I had to inspect 5 toilets before I settled for the 5th one which was ADEQUATELY CLEAN or shall I say LESS FILTHY, before I could take a pee. Of the two toilets adjacent to my seat 65, one was UNUSABLE AS IT could not be locked from inside due to MISSING LATCHES. As for the other, THE LESS SAID THE BETTER. There was a massive...
