28 Glorious Years of Service from one of the most successful locomotive classes of Indian Railways, the versatile and ever dependable, "WAP-4".

The thought of a midlamp locomotive has always been synonymous with the mention of WAP-4 since early days. Therefore, presenting a picture which portrays WAP-4 with both mid-recessed & mid-mounted headlamp arrangement.

frame: Howrah (HWH) WAP 4 locomotives, # 22397 (mid-recessed headlamps) & # 22277 (mid-mounted headlamps) resting at electric loco trip shed, Howrah.

In my opinion, ELS/Howrah is one of apt choices which complements this occasion. The shed holds:

1) The last WAP-4 with mid-mounted headlamps, 22310.

2) The first WAP-4 with mid-recessed headlamps, 22309.

3) The last midlamp WAP-4, 22573.

4) The first top lamp WAP-4, 22574.

5) Two unique WAP 4s, 22326 & 22378

6) The entire fleet of ex-WAP 6 (22401 to 22415). Few have been transferred to Gonda at present.

The WAP-4 locomotive is a more powerful version of its predecessor WAP-1 locomotive class ( the first ever electric locomotive class dedicated to the passenger domain ). From using WAP-1 shell with mid-mounted headlamps, very first usage of mid-recessed headlamps in IR, introduction of special electronic sensors by Vadodara/WR & denoting them as WAP-4E to different liveries & structural diversities, the WAP-4 fleet has been subject to a range of technical innovations.

Rated at 5,350 HP , the first WAP-4 # 22061 christened as "Ashok" was rolled out on August 27, 1994. The loco was initially homed by Jhansi followed by transfer to Ghaziabad, Ludhiana & Diesel Loco Shed Tughlakabad (current home shed).
