Dehradun Shatabdi once was one of the most successful shatabdi of IR ! too many halts , unnecessary loco reversal at SRE and low average speed has ruined it... ideally DDN-DEL distance should be covered in 3-4 hours. but it takes 6 hours. Railways are now constructing a new expressway to Dehradun , the car and bus travel time may further reduce to 3 hours in the coming years... UK government has proposed railway to construct new rail line between SRE and DDN , running along expressway.. but railways has not commented it on yet !
UK state transport Volvo non stop leaving at 600 ISBT Kashmere Gate reaches by 1000-1030 everyday while later dep might take 5 hrs max. By 2026 when new expressway is opened the travel time by car will take 3-4 hrs max end to end.
yes , why any one would travel via premium train which takes double the actual road travel time. Delhi Dehradun Rail trip will go in to Narrow gauge mode. Distance between SRE and DDN is hardly 70 kms by road. There is a high demand for direct railway line between the two.. but railways is not interested as it seems ! Train travels via Haridwar and Raja Ji national parks taking a 140 kmph route.. i don't think that they will divert shatabdi via deoband roorkee line once it is open.. Though that line would save 40 odd kms !
