THE DIRE STATE OF RAILWAY FINANCES
Even as several state governments have started providing air-conditioned buses and quality road travel, trains are known for their lack of hygiene, bad food and stampedes at stations. The safety report points out that the reason for the abysmal state of affairs is the lack of capital investment on the part of the ministry, especially during the past five years.
Ever since the Sixth Pay Commission gave its recommendations, the railways has been overburdened with an inflated wage bill (see Why Safety Measures Take a Back Seat)....
