Passenger service in the Karur– Salem section likely after Pongal....S. Vijayakumaran, Chief Administrative Officer of the Construction Wing of Southern Railway, Chennai, inspected the progress of the ongoing signal and telecommunication works in the newly laid broad gauge track in the Salem–Karur section on Tuesday.
Mr. Vijayakumaran, accompanied by V. Thavamani Pandi, Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Salem division and other top officials of Construction Wing and Salem division, travelled in an inspection coach from Salem to Karur this morning and inspected the visibility of signals.

The work of laying BG track from Salem to Karur via Namakkal covering a distance of 85 kms initially commenced in 1997 at an estimated cost of Rs.225 crore. Later, due to delay in the execution of works, the project cost was revised to Rs.630 crore. The laying of track was completed a year ago.
Regular freight service on the track commenced last month. Now three to four goods train services are operated on this track a day.
Following the persistent demands of the MPs of this area, all the pending works have been speeded up and will be competed soon. After the mandatory inspection of the track strength and condition by Commissioner of Railway Safety, the passenger service is expected to commence by January 2013, probably after Pongal, sources added.
The new route would reduce travelling time between Salem and Karur by an hour as currently trains from Salem had to reach Erode and then to Karur covering an additional distance of 40 km.
