On a recent trip a foreigner who was a on a brief visit to India asked me " why have they made it mandatory to own a Indian mobile number to book a ticket online?"
I replied that it was an effort by the IRCTC to do away with people who create multiple ids.
She was confused and queried again " Do you really think it is a deterrent considering that SIM cards are available here dime a dozen?

aaj mujhe bhi ek sim card leni hai,dekhte hai.do-chaar mahine pehle tak toh prasad ki tarah sim card mil rahi thi...
now the rules have been tightened...pehle mere paas v 10 12 active sim huwa karte the...ab mushkil se 2...wo v agar 6 mahina na recharge karo to kisi aur ko bech diya jata hai...in kolkata new sim are very tough to get. it gets activated after due verification. if at any time not verified, gets deactivated immediately...
So how does it remove the apathy of foreigners without indian sims who want to book on irctc from a different country before visiting India. The very idea of online booking was to have a global reach.
The exclusive FT Quota is for them yes the booking facility is not available everywhere but it is available for them only. Rest of berths are for citizens of this country. But if they know some one in India they can manage this GN quota booking too. Here we have huge gap between demand and supply of train berths so such majors are need of hour.
