Could be, but this is what was told to us at SBC by a loco pilot hailing from Bengal employed with SWR.We kept pressing him for possible reasons and the only reason that he could offer was this. He was due to pull the SBC-BWT express that day.

Raising the pantograph is more on driver decision and on some IR Technical directive... In case the loco is hauling a Oil Tanker it may raise its front pantograph... The reason is to avoid the sparks
