Could be, but this is what was told to us at SBC by a loco pilot hailing from Bengal employed with SWR.We kept pressing him for possible reasons and the only reason that he could offer was this. He was due to pull the SBC-BWT express that day.

You will be happy to know this pantograph are manufactured by a Kolkata base company... The name of the company is STONE INDIA...

Raising the pantograph is more on driver decision and on some IR Technical directive... In case the loco is hauling a Oil Tanker it may raise its front pantograph... The reason is to avoid the sparks...
