160 YEARS OF INDIA'S FIRST PASSENGER TRAIN JOURNEY.
April 16, 2013 the 160 th Anniversary of India's first passenger train journey, in which 400 invited passengers traveled in 14 carriage on a 57 minute journey from BORI BUNDER in Bombay [now Mumbai] to THANE.

MADRAS SUBURBAN: 2nd April, 1931.

Sri George Fredrick Stanely, then Governor of Madras inagurated the electric suburban railway service between Madras Beach and Tambaram. Explaining the reasons for this project, Sir Percy Rothera, the then agent of South Indian Railway Company, remarked that areas such as Saidapet, St. Thomas Mount and Tambaram which were agriculture areas till 1920's had developed into residential areas. The Railways felt that it was necessary the distance between Beach and Tanbaram was to covered in less than one hour.
