For passengers’ safety and to reduce expenditure, several important trains are going to get ‘Linke Holfmann Busch’ (LHB) coaches.
Minister of State for Railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said that these types of coaches are safe and cheaper to maintain. The sector allotted in the budget for safety, will now be used to use these rakes in some trains.
All rakes of Howrah Rajdhani are made of this LHB technique. Among the three rakes of Poorva Express, one is made of this German technology. The remaining rakes will be converted also very soon. Howrah-

Dhanbad double- decker rake is of this technology too. Soon, Jodhpur Express and Mumbai Mail will be run with these types of coaches.
These coaches of German technology are being built at The Railway Coach Factory in Kapurthala of Haryana. Coach experts informed that the coaches are lighter; internal problems are detected in microprocessor- based control. This helps in avoidance of accidents. Despite Buffer- to- buffer length is the same to the older ones, these modern coaches offer higher seating capacity. Internal space is bigger too. Presently used coaches tend to go on to the top of the other coaches during accidents. But, these German- technology- based coaches slip beside each other instead. So, the probability of fatalities is reduced.
Although top speed of common rakes is 130 kmph, speed of these LHB rakes is 160 kilometer per hour. Because these modern- technology- based coaches are light in weight. The old coaches in use, do have 24 generators under the 24 coaches. This is called self generating coach. Maintenance of these is expensive. In comparison to this, LHB rakes consist of End On Generation Coaches, i.e., one at the front end and another at the rear. Maintenance cost is very low for these.
