Suppose I take a general class ticket from Mumbai to Ahmedabad and board a train which starts from Mumbai and terminates at Surat and then i take a different train that starts from Surat and terminates at Ahmedabad. Am i allowed to travel this way?
No... Journey break needs travel of 501 km for you to be entitled for a break .... and Mumbai to Surat is less than that...
you have to buy two separate tickets.
You can travel in any train but Class of Travel and Class of Ticket must match at any time of travel...

more opinions please. I will travel on the same day with only two hours gap in between the two journeys.
As it is general ticket, u r very well allowed to do this.but u should take the onward journey on the same day u reach SURAT.

@ Shri Kishor** - Break journey rules are applied on reservation ticket.

I guess it's possible.......if you have a general class unreserved ticket from Mumbai to Ahmedabad you may change trains at any of the intermediate stations....be sure only to board the Unreserved coaches while changing trains....
Yes correct the journey should be continued on the same day....
