There was a railway branch line connecting Vedaranyam to Mayiladuthurai via Thiruthuriapoondi and ending at Agastiyampalli.
The line was opened to passenger traffic on 15 May 1919.
The railway line is discontinued and in turn affects the economy of the town.
The nearest railway station is located at Thiruthuraipoondi, located 35 km
