Collected or just abandoned...both are true. In most of the big stations, Ticket checking staff will be waiting near exit to check the ticket from passengers and collect them normally (unless passenger demands that he needs it). Otherwise, passengers will abandon it.

After collecting them they make a detailed report about numbers of incoming passengers etc.
