For the kind of overcrowding that exists in Mumbai Suburban Railways (around 4000-5000 passengers per train during peak hours!), the closed door appears to be a very impractical solution.
In fact for ensuring safety of passengers, automatic closure of gates is a must for suburban trains. But before that, the level of traffic has to be brought down to a level which will make operation of such gates practically feasible. Patient (Suburban train travel) is presently in ICU (due to being unsafe & overcrowded) and for its excellent health & 6 pack abs (Safe & reasonably comfortable travel) it has to be brought out of ICU (by reducing the crowding). It is very heartening to know that Prabhu Ji...
more... has done exactly the same by reviving the proposals of constructing elevated suburban corridors i.e. CST-Panvel/Kalyan, Churchgate-Virar. World over elevate tracks are being laid in a big way and why not India could do the same? For the instant case, it is extremely difficult due to heavy traffic and space constraints, but IRlys have the great capability to overcome the same under the able leadership of RM. Possibility should be explored to have two corridors in long term future just above the existing two corridors of W Rly. And C Rly. Ultimately these corridors will come to rescue of Mumbai from the onslaught of its notorious Rains.
