The speed limit for trains in the elephant zone (Goilkera-Manoharpur, Kokpada-Chakuliya, and Chandil-Gundavihar) from 10 PM to 6 AM has been reduced to 50 km per hour, allowing for swift train stoppage upon elephant sighting. This safety measure follows the deaths of over 18 elephants and their calves since 2017 due to trains on the Howrah-Mumbai route.
The subway plan was initially conceived four to five years ago in the Chakradharpur division, but due to the vigilance of loco pilots and railway personnel, the lack of accidents prompted the project to be put on hold. Senior DCM Aditya Chaudhary from the Chakradharpur Railway Division highlighted the cooperation between the Railway and Forest Departments to ensure elephant safety.
The urgency for this initiative stemmed from an incident on October 14th when a baby elephant was struck and killed by a goods train near Bandomunda. The loco pilots were arrested by the Forest Department, leading to protests from railway staff and prompting their release after 15 hours.
On the Tata-Badampahar route, near Haldipokhur station, three elephants were spotted near the tracks. As a precaution, the train speed was reduced and the Forest Department advised the use of loud horns to deter elephants.
