Hello fellow IRIans,

I recently traveled on the 12151 LTT Shalimar Samarsata Express via Adra and Purulia, completing the end-to-end journey on October 3rd, 2024. It was my first time on this train in seven years, back when it ran with ICF coaches.

...
Here's my review:

Punctuality:
The down train is notorious for being late by 8 to 10 hours, and it sometimes gets rescheduled from LTT itself. For example, the Wednesday departure on October 2nd, 2024, arrived at Shalimar 9 hours late.

For my journey, the train departed on time on October 3rd. It was running ahead of schedule at Nagpur, but after Raigarh, we were stuck behind the Azad Hind Express, which had been ahead of us since Manmad. Thanks to SER’s freight train prioritization, by the time we reached Shalimar, we were 5 hours late.

Platform issues also caused delays at Santragachi and Shalimar. Our last coaches were outside Santragachi station since platform 2 is too short, and we had to wait 30 minutes at the Shalimar outer due to platform availability.

Food:
I ordered e-catering from Nagpur for lunch and Bilaspur for dinner, so I can’t fully comment on the train’s food. However, the breakfast items like bread cutlet and omelet were good, but both non-veg and veg thalis were substandard according to my fellow passengers.

Cleanliness:
Shout out to LTT CDO! The OBHS staff regularly cleaned the coaches, and the washrooms were maintained well. Unfortunately, some passengers didn’t flush after use, making the toilets dirty. I noticed people smoking inside the toilet, and even though I reported it to Rail Madad, there was little response.

Railfanning:
There’s plenty of action for railfans on this route! Since my train was ahead of schedule, we were looped at Khapri, where the Dakshin Express bound for Nizamuddin overtook us. Post-Nagpur, there were lots of freight trains, and don’t miss the scenic beauty of the Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh border ghat.

Availability:
People from the Adra-Midnapore belt prioritize this train, so during peak times, tickets get booked quickly. If you’re traveling during festival seasons, make sure to book well in advance.

Overall:

It’s a good train, but the punctuality is quite poor.

Let me know if I missed anything or if you have something to add!

Sharing some snaps from the journey.

Cheers!

Undoubtedly the best train between Kolkata and Patna. If you do not get tickets in other overnighter trains between the two cities, book a ticket in this train. You can also be assured of the absence of the problem of unreserved passengers barging into the train.

A guide for inter-terminal travel in kolkata.
HWH-SHM / SHM-HWH:
Take the prepaid taxi from Howrah. Cheap and safest. Fare would be just Rs 100. Shalimar station is in Shibpur area near around the Botanical gardens. One have to go via the Vidyasagar setu to reach this part of Kolkata. Or one more option is Check whether your express train from SHM has halt at Santragachi. If yes then hop into any Mecheda/Panskura/kharagpur side SER EMU from HOWRAH and alight at Santragachi. Board your express train from SRC. This option is very

time saving and cheap if you are in a hurry.

Pretty useful info
Also, Apart from 15021 and 22213, all other trains leaving SHM has a stoppage at SRC. So SRC is a better option any day

Buses are available from the Main road outside Santragachi.
If you don't wish for a hassled journey (considering the conditions of Kolkata buses here) , there are 4 EMU trains running from SRC to SHM (3 Dedicated and 1 Mecheda-SHM). Check out departure timings of your train and hop into any of these EMU or else majority of SHM trains (except PNBE duronto) halt at SRC also. Make yourself comfortable.

In that case, why is IR developing SHM instead of SRC as a terminal point? Already SRC has gotten some trains in its kitty, why not shift more trains there instead of SHM?

No further space at SRC
SRC will always be more convenient than SHM because its right on the highway. But SHM there is lot of space for augmentation of platforms. Also, SRC is congested due to trains from and to howrah. So 2 to 3 platforms always occupied by howrah passenger express demu memu trains...No such need at SHM

Best board buses that are bound towards BE College/ B. Garden from Hwh to reach Shalimar LC Gate. From this point, e-rickshaws (locally called as Toto) are available till SHM station premises.

Alternatively, Totos to Avani Mall is available near PF-23 side. One could reserve a Toto from Avani Mall to Shalimar Railway Station as well.

Those who are travelling from Howrah by bus to Shalimar, make sure you board the bus no 55 or the B.Garden-Esplanade mini bus. The reason for that is both these buses take you closer to the station than any other bus on the route. When you are on-board the bus, ask the conductor to drop you off at the 'Shalimar 3-no gate' stoppage and from there, it's a straight walk to the station. Should take you about 4-5 mins.

For those who are coming from the Rabindra Sadan Side, avail the

white buses like Barasat-B.Garden or Sealdah-B.Garden and ask the conductor to drop you off at the same stoppage. Other buses include 213/1.

As the name suggests, the Sealdah-B.Garden bus is a direct link from Sealdah to Shalimar and so if you are travelling from Sealdah to Shalimar or in the reverse route, do avail that bus.
