Mangalore Junction (formerly Kankanady) is quite away from Mangalore City, but most of the trains from Kerala towards Goa and further north pass through this important Junction. A couple of years back, I was shocked to find that the station does not have a cloak room to keep luggages. It was agony to travel some 10 km from the city centre to find this fact and return all the way back to our hotel. I wrote to the Railway Ministry, but there was no response. I am not aware if there is any cloak room facility now.
Mangalore Jn is like 5km from Mangalore Central which is in city centre.Even though people blame the station being inaccessible,my suggestion is to try Ola Cabs which charges like Rs80 from Mangalore Central to Mangalore Jn.I had travelled a few days back and agree on the lack of facilities at MAJN.
Try this one dude: Vasco Da Gama is Goa's largest city but has worse rail connections compared to even villages like Karmali and when I wrote a grievance on pgportal got a reply that Madgaon is situated just 30kms away from Vasco and it has good rail connectivity but the dumb fellow answering my grievance didn't look to my point that the taxi drivers charge more than Rs. 500 for the 30kms ride which is much higher than SL class fare from Goa to Mumbai.

Prepaid auto-rickshaw counter has started functioning since yesterday. Make use of this facility if you happen to be at MAJN and have to travel to places around the city. click here
