Inaugurated by Sri Mohan Dharia, the then Union Minister for Commerce and Civil supplies on April 1st, 1979 at the Pune station. However, this was not a new train.
It was originally introduced as the 'Srinagar express' running between Delhi and Pathankot. A train by this name was running before 1960, but was discontinued for some time.
