Inaugurated by Sri Mohan Dharia, the then Union Minister for Commerce and Civil supplies on April 1st, 1979 at the Pune station. However, this was not a new train.
It was originally introduced as the 'Srinagar express' running between Delhi and Pathankot. A train by this name was running before 1960, but was discontinued for some time. more... 1972. In 1978, it was announced that the Srinagar express would be extended to Pune. Subsequently, the train was extended, renamed to 'Jhelum express' and formally inaugurated in 1979.
