Introduced as a daily express between Katihar and New Delhi via Patna from May 5th, 1989. In the early 90's it was extended to New Jalpaiguri and given the name 'Mahananda' express. In the mid-90's, in an effort to make states which weren't connected to the rest of the country feel 'spiritually' connected to the country, some trains' names were changed to include the states names. thanks for sharing the info :) i think since its inauguration it is known as mahananda express . dont exactly remember when it was extended to njp but yes a link portion was extended to njp and later on entire rake was extended to apdj . one of the very few trains where i have seen decrement of coaches in all reserved classes. :(
