As per this article Ernakulam Area Manager of Southern Railway P.L. Ashok Kumar said free track was available to operate an intercity express train or even ‘premium train’ that begins from Ernakulam at 6.30 a.m. and reaches Coimbatore at 10.30 a.m.
“Similarly, the Dhanbad-Alappuzha express can be extended up to Kochuveli in Thiruvananthapuram,” he said. This will benefit office-goers and others from Ernakulam.The return train will benefit commuters from Kochuveli who can reach Ernakulam before Jan Satabdhi arrives here at 9.15 a.m. the next day.

Extending the superfast and express trains are not goin to be feasible.a few hundred general tickets for extending a train for a 100kms will be a absolute waste.as already the line to trivandrum with the single line is already a bottle neck.and providing frequent stopages for the superfast and express trains will be same as an passenger train.anf the useless brain behind using the karaikal express rake to kottayam...what use dear ir bloggers and geeks???extending the vanchinad express to kanyakumari,duranto or garibrath to banglore weekly and with the same rake to hyderabad,extending the banglore ernakulam superfast (sun,mon,wed)any one of the days rake to mysore,bi weekly train to kolkata and to any other northeastern city,restarting the guwahati ernakulam express from ernakulam itself,salem intercity,madgaon express bi weekly,train to gujrat,extending milenium express to himachal etc..all these r just possible..ernakulam has more passengers and need than trivandrum.oh lord have mercy on the dafts.
