Ticketless travel or travel on improper tickets are both punishable offences and also cause a huge loss to the economy. In 2013-2014, 90 lakh persons were caught travelling on improper tickets - approximately 4 lakh more than the previous year for the corresponding period. Rs 637 crore was realised as amount due through penalties and other fines.
Indian Railways requests its passengers not to travel without a valid ticket, or travel with unbooked luggage - both harm the economy.
