Cancellation is not allowed in premium trains as they are mainly meant for emergency travel and make up for increased traffic at special occasions. However, what about situations that prevent travel beyond the control of the commuter?
Recently, I had to face a situation of the death of a immediate family member preventing travel by premium train - however, I could not cancel ticket as it was not allowed and neither could I travel. I had booked 4 seats which meant that those seats would be blocked without any benefit to any passenger and also I would not get any refund.

think IR should include some situations when a ticket can be cancelled by an individual not only in premium trains but also in tatkal in some serious personal situations in addition to train cancellation.
I list some reasons as follows:
1. Death/ critical medical condition preventing travel of passenger
2. Cancellation of ticket of fellow passengers in case of death/ critical medical condition preventing travel of 1 passenger in list
3. Death/ critical medical condition preventing travel of an immediate family member.
There may be many others, but this surely needs attention.

They do allow RAC and I am talking of cancellation before train departure and chart preparation and not after as possible in online booking. Looking at the demand of premium trains, IR may earn more as the fare of ticket may have considerable gone up when you are cancelling.

It may be due to years of losses by the railways. Now IR wants to make up for all the loses that they incurred during the previous government's tenure where they were refrained from increasing the fares due to politics interfering in IR matters.

Allowing Cancellation for premium train isn't feasible.

However, I believe that the policy adopted by IR for Premium Trains is not good and Railway shall refund atleast 50% of the Fare in such case or a Flat Amount higher than normal charges. The pricing model was adopted in-line with Airlines and Airlines too allow cancellation with a huge cancellation fee (However we still get some money back).
.
This would help other passengers to get reserved accommodation in case of Cancellations.
.

But I believe this has to be done without any reasons attached (like Death, Illness as you mentioned).
.
If IR is following a policy (whether justifiable or not, acceptable or not) I would not like to change it for personal problems of Consumers.
.
The point here is that if it is not justifiable than it should go outright. With so much rush nowadays, the reason that IR would not get Pax for Cancelled Berths is unimaginable.
