This follows a very very long route (so slow) train from Chennai to Guruvayur. Chennai-Madurai Koodal exp and Madurai-Guruvayur exp were combined to get this train. I think now these two can once again be separated as follows:
(1) Chennai - Kanyakumari Koodal exp (dep 07:00 reaching Kanyakumari 19:00)
(2) Madurai - Guruvayur exp as of old.

Many thanks to both of you. I had this question in my mind for a long time- why this train from Chennai to Guruvayur is run in a round about route.
Your suggestion is good. There should be one more train in your list , MDU GUV express via DG,PLNI,POY,PGTN,GUV
Yes, but we have to wait some more months. Yesterday newspaper carried the news that it will take some more months to complete Pollachi-Palghat and Pollachi-Coimbatore segments
POY-PGTN will be completed soon , it shall take that route for a while
Requirements can be split into 4:
1. MS upto TPJ pax to GVR: A ONT from MS-GVR via VM,TPJ,ED,CBE,TCR (daily)
2. TPJ upto DG pax to GVR: A ONT from MV/VLNK/ KIK - GVR via TPJ,DG,PLNI,PGT,TCR (all twice a week)
3. MDU to NCJ pax to GVR: A ONT train from MDU - GVR via TEN, NCJ,TVC,ERS,TCR (daily)
