This follows a very very long route (so slow) train from Chennai to Guruvayur. Chennai-Madurai Koodal exp and Madurai-Guruvayur exp were combined to get this train. I think now these two can once again be separated as follows:
(1) Chennai - Kanyakumari Koodal exp (dep 07:00 reaching Kanyakumari 19:00)
(2) Madurai - Guruvayur exp as of old.

normal reason for extension of trains is platform non availabilty at the stations . when TVC has congestion in it , trains will be extended to NCJ or TVC . 16650 Parasuram Exp was one such to get extension to NCJ . like wise some trains too . MS-GUV highly helps the south bound people to reach MDN / TEN from MS in day time . its very very very rare to travel without rush in this GUV exp . also it takes MS-TEN at exactly 11.30 - 12 hours as that of superfast trains take to reach at normal express fare .
