Mangaluru Central- A terminal dealing with 26 trains(19 daily) and yet too far from its demands !
Mangaluru, being the entry point of Karnataka, deals with 19 daily trains, a hexa weekly demu and few bi weeklies and weeklies and yet it is really disappointed when it comes to its own demands! It has more than one daily train to the capital cities of tamil nadu and kerala. Some views are that trains are being dumped at mangalore. It may be true but mangalore is in

such a situation that its share will be rejected ! He is a lucky chap to get a rajdhani train from kerala through it which they can use to the national capital! But its location is in such a way that it has three routes-one towards kerala side covering kasargod, kannur, kozhikode, shoranur ; another towards madgaon via udupi, byndoor mookhambika road, karwar ; and one towards subrahmanya Raod,Sakleshpur .

The sakleshpur line has restrictions based on ghats and hmrdua through which it has bangalore connections. So one route is blocked from routing further trains. The need of the hour for mangaluru is a hubli, bangalore and vishakapatnam daily at convenient timings. Since one route is blocked it has two routes- the Kerala route and the madgaon route. The route towards hubli from madgaon is not accessible due to the kulem-castle rock ghat section which has restrictions. So that too is blocked ! For the 3 needs of the hour mangaluru is in a pathetic situation as the route through panvel or kerala is too lengthy and time consuming and thus those two are also blocked !
Being a good city showing patronage they should get more trains and ofcourse they deserve more! Moreover there are no good amount (not more than 2) plying in the konkan route to mangalore for the benifit of intermediate passengers!
Kasargod can be developed as a terminal to stop a chennai mangalore train and 2 trivandrum mangalore trains there. But with this solution only passenger trains can be introduced in mangaluru towards konkan. An alternative line like thalassery-mysuru or byndoor mookhambika road - shivamogga or any route needs approval and immediate execution to bring in revenue and comfort to the passengers. If such a route comes then it is easy as the passengers can be shifted from sr to kr ! Again the construction is not so easy and is really rough and tough as nature doesn't permit it! It is because western ghats spread from kaniyakumari to mumbai doesn't have a natural pathway in the above strech! But a big need is a new line to bring in good news for mangaluru! Lets hope it happens soon!
