AC fares in IRlys are not less as compared to luxury ac sleeper buses and are just little less than economy air fare especially in Rajdhani/Shatabdi/Duronto trains. Even 25% increase may dent the occupancy rates.
Root of the problem is that the second class train fares are just a small fraction of equivalent bus fares and more than 90% passengers in IRlys travel in second class. This distortion has to be corrected to a reasonable level through rationalisation of fare structure so that ridiculously low second class (esp. ordinary) fares can be brought to a reasonable level.
