For the record (it was stated in parliament by the Hon'bl Finance Minister) that railways constitute only 6% of the national demand for diesel. I disagree that railways run these trains at a loss. My take is at least a break-even would be thought for in a worst case scenario. The whole idea of railways able to make profit is the economies of scale in simple best utilization of available resources and maintaining good occupancy on such trains to remain profit-able. Even a normal express train generates minimal profits for the railways.
