Most of the route has decent MPS. The bottleneck is the the Shiradi Ghat section between SKLR-SBHR. This section has 1:37 gradients for 55km and a PSR of 30kmph. So trains usually take 2-3 hours for crossing this section, particularly longer in the night time.
This route is a heaven for AC bus operators, but mostly due to lack of trains ( timings do play a role, but as of now lack of trains is a bigger problem than time of travel). have excellent demand. Buses cover the route in 6-7 hours ( I am not sure if there are any faster ones, I have traveled only in these till Madikeri), but there is more than enough demand for trains between the two cities.
