This 2165 is a very old train. I remember it started in mid 1980s. At that time it did not have a name. I think it was in early 1990s that it was called Ratnagiri. We can guess why..In Honorific Sanskrit Giri means "venerable, elevated, worshipful". We know Rathna means Jewel. So Rathnagiri was perhaps a name for Beneras - ''The Jewel among the worshipful''
The point is Konkan Railways and Rathnagiri as a station started only in late 1990s. And Dadar Rathnagiri Passenger was introduced. After a period of time Railways must have realized that having a ''passenger'' and ''express'' starting from the same central railway caused confusion. So they decided to avoid using the name Rathnagiri for the 2165....

I also tried to research this matter Sudhir and I think your reasoning and analysis are correct. However, GIRI in Sanskrit also means HILL or MOUNTAIN.
pratap ji official website mein bahut se stations ke naam or code galat hai isliye aapne dekha hoga ki kai baar map manually correct karna padta hai.
I am not talking about this particular case but believe me more than 30% stations code not included in the site till now.
